Metung commemorated ANZAC Day with dawn and mid-morning services on Friday, marking 111 years since the 1915 Gallipoli landing and honouring the sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women.
The small village held its Dawn Service at 6am, followed by a Commemoration Service at 11am on the Village Green. Seven local men from Metung are recorded as having enlisted to serve in the First World War.
The services drew residents and visitors together in reflection, with both events focusing on remembrance, respect and the enduring legacy of the ANZAC spirit.
Following the Dawn Service, the Metung RSL hosted a Gunfire Breakfast, prepared by the Metung Lions Club. In keeping with long-standing ANZAC traditions, coffee and tea were offered alongside a symbolic addition of rum, reflecting the historic “gunfire” breakfasts once used to provide warmth and fortitude to soldiers.
After the mid-morning commemoration, the community gathered again at the RSL for a game of Two-up, continuing a traditional ANZAC Day custom that brought locals together in a shared expression of remembrance and camaraderie.
The day’s events reinforced the strong community connection in Metung and the ongoing commitment to honouring those who served.
