Bairnsdale has delivered a strong performance at the Champions of State Pennant (midweek) tournament at the Moama Bowling Club last week.
The side won four of its five matches, finishing second in its group behind eventual champions Ocean Grove, who were Bairnsdale’s only defeat across the two-day event.
Sitting fourth after day one, Bairnsdale lifted on day two with two wins to climb past Portland Memorial and Newborough.
After a day-one loss to Ocean Grove and wins over Newborough and Portland Memorial, the team entered day two aiming to finish strongly — and did just that.
A commanding 57–30 victory over Wangaratta highlighted the day, with Colleen Smith, Carla Proud, Stephen Smith and Stewart Pyers producing a dominant 30–15 rink win, including a decisive run of six consecutive ends and 16 shots.
Jeff Watts, Timothy Kennedy, Geoff Aitken and Neil Watts also secured a solid 14–8 win.
In the final match, Bairnsdale defeated Rosebud 47–34, with Glynis Bugeja, Christopher Mackintosh, Peter Baylis and Adam Easton producing a standout 21–4 rink win. Watts, Kennedy, Aitken and Watts shared their contest 13–13.
Ocean Grove went on to defeat Bendigo 54–41 in the grand final.
