After two rounds of East Gippsland netball, only one team remains unbeaten and sits alone at the top of the ladder, Lucknow.
A familiar pattern is emerging, with the Magpies having finished minor premiers in each of the past two seasons, but still unable to secure the ultimate prize on grand final day in September. Coach Erica Lynch will be hoping her third year at the helm proves to be the breakthrough campaign.
Lucknow faced Paynesville in the final match of the split round last Saturday at Lucknow under lights, in front of a strong crowd. It was another clinical display from the well-drilled Magpies, who were able to score freely against a Gulls outfit that is improving but still developing.
Hayley Escudero was the standout on court, well supported by Ali Redenbach and Ash Coates in a dominant team performance. For Paynesville, Lucy Weston, Paige Strickland and Amy Geisler were among the better contributors, but the Gulls were consistently beaten in their one-on-one contests.
This weekend, the competition steps up a gear with the top four sides set to clash. Stratford host Lucknow in the match of the round, while Wy Yung take on Lindenow at home, with Lindenow needing a strong showing to hold onto fourth spot.
Boisdale Briagolong, currently fifth, will be expected to strengthen their finals push when they meet the Seagulls at the Lakes Entrance Recreation Reserve. Orbost also host Paynesville and will be strong favourites in their clash.
