After a week of reflection, Lakes Entrance will return to the field this Saturday against Boisdale Briagolong in round three of the East Gippsland Football Netball League at Lakeside Oval.
The Seagulls were disappointing losers in round two to arch rival Orbost Snowy Rovers, surrendering a three-goal half time lead to eventually go down by 29 points. The insipid second-half effort drew the ire of coach Darren Martin, who was less than impressed post-match.
That result followed an honourable round one loss to reigning premier Wy Yung. After that performance, Lakes Entrance had been identified as a significant improver in 2026 and was expected to account for the Blues, but the result did not go to script.
Boisdale Briagolong enters the clash in ominous form after a 105-point demolition of Wy Yung last week. While the Tigers fielded a depleted side, the result has seen the Bombers quickly installed as premiership favourites.
On paper, the Seagulls face a significant challenge against the in-form Bombers, though there are some positives heading into the match. Ruck duo Josh Wykes and James Beha will return, while Dylan Nikolajew will miss due to work commitments.
The Bombers will also be without several key figures, including Tom Jolly, who is getting married this week, along with Kel Porter, co-coach Kade Renooy and Tim Dessent. However, Ben Wilkinson and Nick Marshall are expected to strengthen the visitors.
Martin is seeking a strong response from his side.
“We need to deliver a consistent four-quarter performance. If we get that right, we have the ability to be competitive against anyone,” he said.
Bomber premiership coach and part of a three-man coaching panel this season, Sam Bedggood,
said his side is looking forward to playing on the expanses of the Lakes Entrance Recreation Reserve.
“The big grounds suit our game. We are in good form and loving how our new recruits like Andrew McKenzie, Ben Brunt, Josh Davis and Will Moon have fitted in and are performing,” Bedggood said.
