St Columb’s Anglican Church, Swan Reach, will celebrate its 120th anniversary on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 11am.
Opened on the same date in 1906 by Bishop A.W. Pain, Bishop of Gippsland, the church was originally part of the Lakes Entrance Parish until 1919, when it was transferred to Bruthen Parish, now known as Tambo Parish.
A Sunday school has operated at the site since the church opened, with a dedicated Sunday School Hall added in 1955. Over the years, the church has also hosted debutante balls, fetes, weddings, funerals and numerous baptisms, strengthening its long-standing connection to the local community. In recent years, pop-up op shops have also been held on site.
The church has faced challenges throughout its history, including proposals in the 1970s to close and remove the building. However, the congregation has consistently rallied to ensure its continuation. Today, a small but committed group continues to maintain church life and operations.
A notable feature of the site is the memorial rose garden, established in 1994 to honour loved ones who have passed away. The garden remains carefully maintained, with records kept of each rose and its dedication.
Current minister the Rev’d Brian Norris said the anniversary service on May 3 will be led by the Bishop of Gippsland, Bishop Richard Treloar. Rev’d Norris is hopeful of a strong turnout from both current and former congregation members, as well as the wider community.
The service will be followed by a light lunch.
