Stratford on the River Avon is preparing for a vibrant celebration of theatre, history and community as the 2026 Stratford Shakespeare Festival returns from Thursday, April 23 to Sunday, May 10.
The annual event, also known as Shakespeare on the River Festival, has been part of Stratford’s cultural calendar for more than 30 years, showcasing community and professional performances alongside markets, workshops and family–friendly events.
This year’s edition embraces the theme “Shakespeare’s Regency Revival,” inviting audiences to experience the elegance, wit and cultural richness of the Regency era through a packed program of productions and events.
The festival opened on Thursday, April 23 with a free launch event at the Stratford Courthouse Theatre, and featured live performances and the announcement of the winners of the Sheila Malady Short Story Competition — an annual creative writing celebration inspired by Shakespeare’s works.
A highlight of the season is the Community Players’ Regent–inspired production of Much Ado About Nothing, staged over multiple nights from April 24 to May 2, at the Stratford Courthouse Theatre. Audiences are encouraged to dress in Regency attire for this lively interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy, which features live music and theatrical mischief.
The festival’s signature social event, The Bard’s Banquet: The Queen’s Ball, takes place at Mechanics Hall on Saturday, May 9, offering a lavish evening of dinner, entertainment and dance. Tickets include locally crafted beer, cider and wines, and organisers expect the event to sell out.
Other theatrical offerings include contemporary and youth–focused productions, such as the Australian Shakespeare Company Graduate Players’ take on Romeo & Juliet on Mother’s Day evening (10 May), and a double feature that brings together innovative performances from Groundwork Youth Theatre and Cubby House Productions.
Family–friendly and free events also form a major part of the festival. The Avon Village Faire & Market on Sunday, May 3, fills the Stratford Village Green with traditional arts and crafts, fresh produce, live music, street performers, children’s games and more — offering something for all ages.
Other highlights include the traditional Evensong service at Holy Trinity Church, performances by local secondary and primary school students, and productions by youth theatre groups and young performers.
Since its inception in 1991, the Shakespeare on the River Festival has grown into a celebrated arts event that enriches Stratford’s cultural life. It draws performers, artists and audiences from across the region and celebrates both Shakespeare’s enduring influence and local creativity.
