East Gippsland United Football Club has begun its Football Victoria Latrobe Valley competition season, travelling to face Newborough Yallourn United Soccer Club (NYUSC) in the opening round last Sunday.
The competition is now operating under Football Victoria management, with the
former Latrobe Valley Soccer League rebranded ahead of the new season.
The Eagles made the trip with a changed senior men’s line-up, including new coaching staff, several new and returning players, and a number of junior players stepping up into senior ranks. However, player availability remained an issue, with just 17 players available across both senior and reserves squads.
In the senior match, NYUSC started strongly, scoring early and controlling large portions of the first half. A combination of sustained pressure and a penalty saw the home side take a 4–0 lead into half time.
East Gippsland United improved its possession and ball movement after the break, spending more time in attack, but struggled to break through a well-organised NYUSC defence. The home side added three further goals in the second half to secure a 7–0 win.
The reserves fixture produced a more competitive contest. NYUSC opened the scoring inside nine minutes and added a second soon after, capitalising on
early momentum.
East Gippsland United responded through Ryan Waller, who struck the club’s first goal after winning possession near halfway and finishing past the goalkeeper. Tom Forster and Waller again added further goals before half-time, helping the Eagles close the gap.
The visitors carried that momentum into the second half, taking control of possession and creating sustained attacking pressure. Goals from Lachlan Feather and Josh West, including a second for West, helped the Eagles extend their lead, before Alex Davidson rounded out the scoring after capitalising on a goalkeeping error.
The reserves recorded a
6–2 victory.
East Gippsland United will host Sale United in round two, with a local derby set for the club’s first home fixture of the season.
Meanwhile, the club’s junior teams travelled to Sale for grading matches over the weekend, with all three teams recording wins. Final fixtures for the next junior round are yet to be confirmed.
