Both the Lakes Entrance Pelicans under 14 boys and girls teams produced impressive performances at the Junior Country Championships in Ballarat over the weekend.
The boys side, coached by Grant Balintong, was outstanding in the preliminary rounds, winning six consecutive matches before bowing out in the first finals match against Horsham. The Pelicans recorded wins over Wonthaggi, Maryborough, Terang, Melton, Sale and Mildura.
The team comprised Callum Yates, Isaac Balintong, Jude Campisi, Rocky Wetere-Katipa, Flynn Whelan, Chad Russell, Joel Pompei, Jacob Spiker and Sunny Eiseman.
The under 14 girls also performed strongly in the preliminary rounds under coach Andrew Wright, recording wins over Orbost, Maryborough and Portland.
However, they were unable to replicate their earlier form against Portland in the finals, going down 26-20 in the opening finals match.
The girls team included Isobel Mills, Keelie Silver, Winter Thomas, Georgi Witham, Billie Hayllar, Willow Harris, Ivy O’Donnell and Willow Watson.
