Lakes Entrance endured a challenging start to the East Gippsland netball season, with a draw in the under 17s providing the lone bright spot in an otherwise tough opening round against Wy Yung.
In a rematch of the 2025 grand final, the under 17 contest lived up to expectations. That decider also finished level at the end of regular time before the Seagulls claimed the premiership in extra time, but there was no need for an extension on this occasion, with both sides sharing the points. The result sets the tone for what shapes as another competitive rivalry throughout the 2026 season. Sadie Stevens and Alyssa Witham were standouts for Lakes.
Wy Yung proved too strong in “A” grade, recording a 53-20 victory. After a promising start, Lakes struggled to contain the Tigers’ defensive pressure and efficiency in attack. Tommi and Poppy Carroll battled hard across the court, while Tessa York and Makayla Grabham combined well in the later stages.
The “B” grade clash was more competitive than the scoreboard suggested, with Wy Yung winning 44-25. The Seagulls stayed in the contest for three quarters before the Tigers’ experience and accuracy proved decisive. York was consistent throughout, while Pariss McKendry impressed in defence.
In “C” grade, Lakes fought hard but was unable to capitalise on scoring opportunities, going down 38-14. Strong defensive efforts kept the game competitive early, with Kelly Poynton a standout performer.
The new-look “D” grade side, blending experience and youth, showed encouraging signs despite a 41-15 defeat. Emma Daly and Bec Williams led from the front in a four-quarter effort.
In the junior grades, Lakes went down 29-12 in the under 15s, with Charli Richardson outstanding in defence and Ruby Jakins working tirelessly in attack. The Seagulls finished the match strongly, highlighting improvement across the four quarters.
Undermanned in the under 13s, Lakes fielded three fill-in players and were defeated 60-13, though Kenya Connally and Maddi Woodward showed promising signs for the future.
A highlight for the club was Tayha Alsop taking the whistle for her first match.
Lakes Entrance will host Orbost Snowy Rovers at Lakeside Oval this week, with both clubs looking to bounce back from opening-round losses.
