The Bairnsdale Tennis Club welcomed players from across Gippsland and beyond for the 78th annual Bairnsdale Labour Day Tennis Tournament, delivering three days of competitive tennis, community connection, and country hospitality.
A total of 173 players competed over the weekend, ranging in age from seven to over 80, showcasing the inclusive, multi-generational spirit that has long defined
the tournament. Events spanned juniors, family competitions, veterans, and open grades, ensuring opportunities for all ages
and abilities.
Local participation was strong, complemented by visitors from across Gippsland and metropolitan areas. In the open singles, visiting twins John and Alex McDonald battled in the men’s final, with Alex taking the title. In the women’s singles, tournament director Sophie Vickers continued her Labour Day success, defeating fellow local Amber Archer to claim the crown.
The tournament also featured standout performances from former Bairnsdale coach and current Lakes Entrance coach Mike Spruzen, demonstrating that experience and skill remain formidable assets on the court. Saturday evening’s one-point tournament was won by visiting junior Max O’Reilly from East Camberwell Tennis Club, while former locals enjoyed reconnecting with their junior club.
The Farquhar Junior Award, recognising a junior player demonstrating sportsmanship, attitude, and respect for the game, was presented by Peter Farquhar to this year’s recipient, Henry Liston.
Off the court, social events were a highlight, with Saturday night’s spit roast by Mark Mason a crowd favourite, complemented by a spread of homemade desserts, while the canteen offered home-baked treats throughout the weekend. Burger Night on Sunday evening also proved popular.
The success of the tournament relied heavily on volunteers, sponsors, and club supporters who contributed prizes and assisted behind the scenes.
Combining competitive tennis, strong community spirit, and country hospitality, the Bairnsdale Labour Day Tournament once again reaffirmed its place as one of Gippsland’s most enduring sporting traditions.
