Gippsland MP Darren Chester was last week elected Deputy Leader of The Nationals Federal Parliamentary team, serving alongside new party Leader Matt Canavan.
In a statement, Mr Chester acknowledged the contributions of the previous leadership team, David Littleproud and Kevin Hogan, describing them as “great friends and champions for regional Australia.”
Born and raised in Gippsland, Mr Chester said his experience living and raising a family in regional communities gives him a clear understanding of the challenges facing country Australians.
“Small-town Australia needs louder voices than ever,” he said.
He criticised the current Labor Government, claiming that after four years Australians are worse off and too many people have been left behind.
“We haven’t been shown the respect we deserve in regional Australia by urban-centric policy makers,” he said, citing the impact of policy decisions on traditional industries and local jobs.
Mr Chester emphasised the role of
The Nationals in advocating for regional communities.
“The Nationals exist for one reason: to stand up for the millions of Australians who live outside our capital cities,” he said.
“I’m determined to help deliver a stronger, safer and fairer regional Australia, where everyone can get ahead.”
He thanked his colleagues for their
trust and acknowledged the support of his wife, Julie, and family throughout his
political career.
