The Club Marine East Gippsland Vic Bream Classic returns to the Gippsland Lakes in Metung on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29, with a strong field of competitors already entered and local interest riding high ahead of the two–day
fishing event.
The lure– and fly–only competition forms round one of the 2026 Vic Bream Classic series, inviting teams of two anglers to chase a combined five–fish bag of black bream each day, with fish weighed live and released. The event’s picturesque arena across the lakes and estuaries of East Gippsland is a highlight on the state’s fishing calendar.
Organisers say entries are progressing well, with more teams registering as the event draws near — and anticipation boosted by the recent success of 16–year–old Metung angler Riley Whelan, who was crowned champion at the inaugural Bream Cup held on the Gippsland Lakes last month. Whelan secured the title with a two–day combined weight of 11.976 kg and claimed the top prize of $8000, showcasing his consistent performance across challenging conditions.
The Vic Bream Classic at Metung not only offers competitive anglers the chance to test their skills for cash and trophies, but also draws visitors and locals to enjoy the region’s renowned fishing waters and community spirit. Cash payouts await the top three teams, along with sponsored prizes such as Sunline Best Bag, Eco Gear Big Bream and junior awards to support rising talent.
Anglers and spectators alike are encouraged to support the weigh–ins and social activities planned throughout the weekend, celebrating Gippsland’s bream fishing culture and outdoor lifestyle.
