The proposed Blue Mackerel offshore wind project, located about 10km off the Gippsland coast between Seaspray and Woodside, has entered the most comprehensive stage of environmental assessment, with the Commonwealth Government confirming it will be assessed through a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
The EIS, conducted under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), will examine potential impacts on matters of national environmental significance, including listed species and communities, migratory species, and Commonwealth marine areas. Public consultation opportunities will be provided as the studies progress.
Kim Downs, manager of environmental planning and approvals for Blue Mackerel, said the project team was prepared for the rigorous assessment.
“An EIS represents the highest level of environmental assessment, and we are fully prepared for that responsibility,” Ms Downs said.
“With our team of scientific experts and experienced environmental impact assessors, Blue Mackerel is committed to delivering a scientifically rigorous EIS and ensuring environmental impacts are minimised and managed to the high standards set by Australian regulators.”
The Blue Mackerel project, developed by JERA Nex bp — a 50:50 joint venture between JERA Co. and bp — has the potential to generate one gigawatt of renewable energy, enough to power up to 750,000 Victorian homes a year by 2032.
As Victoria’s remaining coal-fired power stations retire, the project will contribute new, clean, and reliable electricity to the state’s energy grid.
The offshore wind farm is being developed on Brataualung and Tatungalung Country and will continue to be guided by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water through the EIS process. Findings from the assessment will inform the final windfarm design and ensure all regulatory requirements are met.
Blue Mackerel represents a significant step for East Gippsland in participating in Victoria’s transition to renewable energy while balancing environmental protection and community consultation.
