Lakes Entrance shooter and coach Dave Jones recently spent a week at the Melbourne Gun Club as a lead referee for the 44th Universal Trench World Championships.
Each range featured in excess of 20,000 targets from Wednesday to Sunday (one practice day and four days of competition). Teams of three referees managed each range, keeping them busy in a variety of roles.
Jones said he was humbled to rub shoulders with the incredible athletes performing at this level, acknowledging that refereeing truly offers the best seat in the house. An added bonus was officiating a World Championships shoot-off, which he described as an awesome experience.
Jones is also the father of dual Olympian Aislin Jones, who took up the sport after watching her father compete as a youngster.
