On International Women’s Day, March 8, Toorloo Fire Brigade proudly celebrated the incredible women who have shaped, supported and strengthened their brigade — past and present, operational and non-operational.
The Give to Gain Campaign encourages a mindset of generosity, collaboration and shared progress.
“It is a message that truly reflects the women of our brigade,” Toorloo Brigade captain Mel Zagami said.
“Every day they give their time, skills, care, leadership and quiet strength, and in doing so our brigade and our community gain so much more.”
The brigade proudly acknowledged its operational members, Captain Mel Zagami and Mandy Walker, who stand shoulder to shoulder with their crews, turning out when it matters most. Through leadership, response, training and mentoring, they demonstrate resilience, professionalism and commitment. They show that strength comes in many forms and that courage is built on preparation, teamwork and trust.
“We also acknowledge and sincerely thank Linda Lee, Avis Salisbury, Heather Richardson and Jo Riordan, who contribute within the non-operational space,” Cpt Zagami said.
“Their dedication in administration and support roles is vital to keeping the brigade running smoothly. From paperwork and organisation to the countless behind-the-scenes tasks that often go unseen, their contributions are essential and genuinely valued.
“We also take a moment to recognise those who came before us. Past life members May Beveridge and Margaret Campbell helped pave the way, leaving a legacy of service, community spirit and determination. Their contributions continue to inspire the culture and values we hold today.
“Finally, to the women who support, encourage, organise, listen, advocate and lead — including those who have contributed in years past — your impact extends far beyond a single role or title. You are the backbone, the steady presence and often the quiet force that keeps everything moving forward.”
Cpt Zagami said their generosity of spirit, willingness to collaborate and commitment to something bigger than themselves perfectly reflects the Give to Gain message.
“If you have ever thought about joining our brigade, whether operationally or in a support role, know this: there is a place for you here — a place to contribute, to learn, to belong and to grow,” she said.
“By celebrating these women, we hope to encourage others to step forward and become part of a brigade that values inclusion, teamwork and community.
“Thank you for everything you give and everything we gain because of you,” Ms Zagami said.
