A glorious weekend on the water turned into a
defining moment for 16-year-old Metung angler Riley Whelan, who claimed first place at the inaugural Bream Cup at Paynesville in a performance that captured the hearts of competitors and spectators alike.
Competing against a strong field of experienced anglers, Riley delivered an unforgettable result, taking home the coveted Inaugural Bream Cup trophy along with $8,000 in first prize money.
In a story that reflects the strength of the local fishing community, Riley competed in a boat generously lent to him by his friend, mentor and fellow competitor Peter Breukel, a gesture that underscores the camaraderie and support that defined the weekend.
Riley also secured $500 from Tasline and BerleyPro for Big Bream Day One and received a $350 prize pack as part of that achievement, rounding out an extraordinary weekend for the young angler.
Event organisers described the victory as a powerful reminder of why
grassroots competitions matter, creating opportunity, building confidence and
celebrating the next generation of the sport.
Strong performances were seen across the field. Paul Malov claimed second place and $4000 in prize money. Dan Mackrell secured third place with $2000 and went on to win day two big bream, earning an additional $500 plus a $350 prize pack from Tasline and BerleyPro. Cam Whittam rounded out the top placings, finishing fourth and taking home $1000.
For now, the spotlight remains firmly on Metung’s newest local champion, a 16-year-old who has already etched his name into Bream Cup history.
