Grade five and six students from Toorloo Arm Primary School enjoyed a hands-on learning experience at the beach on February 16, participating in an Open Water Swimming and Survival program delivered by Life Saving Victoria.
With perfect conditions at the Cunningham Arm inlet, educators and instructors guided students through a range of safety activities. Pupils learned the meaning of beach safety signs and how to make informed decisions about swimming at any beach.
Students developed skills in reading water conditions by observing wave patterns and water colour, and learned how to assess potential hazards before entering the water. A key part of the program involved mock water rescues, where students practised identifying safe
objects to assist someone in
difficulty while keeping themselves safe.
Life Saving Victoria reinforced three essential safety messages throughout the session: never swim alone, always swim between the flags, and prioritise your own safety in any situation.
Both staff and students praised the experience, leaving the beach more confident and better equipped to stay safe in and around the ocean.
