Lakes Entrance residents planning to gather firewood this autumn are being encouraged to prepare early, with free personal-use collection areas opening across Gippsland last Sunday, March 1.
The season runs through to June 30, 2026, but authorities warn some areas may close ahead of that date depending on fire risk or wood availability.
Forest Fire Management Victoria will release updated maps online detailing open collection sites, including information on vehicle access and safety requirements.
Acting deputy chief fire officer Peter Brick said collectors should take advantage of opportunities early in the season and ensure they consult the latest maps before travelling.
“Please check daily fire conditions and road closures before travelling to collection areas, and only drive on formed roads,” he said.
He also stressed that chainsaws must not be used on Total Fire Ban days and that collectors should wear appropriate safety clothing and only operate equipment they are trained to use.
Wood available in collection areas may vary in size and quality and could require a wheelbarrow to transport it to vehicles, as vehicles must remain on formed tracks.
Strict limits apply, with a daily cap of two cubic metres per person and 16 cubic metres per household per financial year. Authorised officers patrol state forests and penalties apply for illegal collection.
Suspected illegal activity can be reported to Crime Stoppers.
