Nicholson trainer Mal Leys was rewarded for his patience at Woolamai last Saturday when seven-year-old mare A Beautiful Noise claimed the Stephen Mannion Cup (2038m).
Leys’ affection for his galloper has never wavered as she chased that elusive maiden victory in recent seasons. The win came at her 41st start and her first appearance on the picnic circuit, after previously threatening to break through on the professional scene.
With the circuit’s leading rider Shaun Cooper aboard, A Beautiful Noise ($3) surged clear late to defeat the Mornington-trained Triginta ($3.80) and Pride of Pariah ($6.50), which nearly fell when disputing the lead early in the straight.
Jockey Leigh Taylor was spoken to by stewards regarding his riding technique and balance following the race.
Despite not having placed prior to Saturday’s breakthrough, A Beautiful Noise has now amassed $30,675 in prizemoney, including the $2300 winner’s cheque.
The mare boasts a number of high-profile local owners, including Tim Bull, Doug Vickers and John Kinniburgh.
