Racing at a major meet can be daunting, but Sale swimmer Mackenzie Gibbs showed little sign of nerves with an outstanding performance at the State Open Long Course Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre last weekend.
Competing in the multiclass section, Gibbs faced a demanding three days of heats and finals and rose to the challenge, breaking several Victorian and state records along the way. Her consistent performances saw her finish as the second-highest point-scoring Victorian female multiclass swimmer of the meet.
Gibbs delivered strong results across a packed program, placing fourth in the 100m backstroke, fifth in the 100m freestyle, third in the 400m freestyle, eighth in the 100m breaststroke, fourth in the 50m freestyle, fifth in another 100m freestyle event, fourth in the 50m backstroke and third in the 200m individual medley.
The results capped a significant meet for the Sale swimmer, who not only reached multiple finals but also set new benchmarks with a series of record-breaking swims across the championships.
