Gippsland Grammar’s rowing program has delivered its strongest showing at the Barwon Regatta in two decades, with students claiming four event victories at the Geelong regatta in late January.
Thirty-five students from years 10 to 12 competed on the Barwon River, achieving podium finishes across multiple divisions. Victories were secured in the female division one quad scull, female division two quad scull, male under-21 quad scull, and female under-21 quad scull events. It marked the first time in recent memory the school has won both top girls’ quad races at this regatta.
The male under-21 quad continued its dominance, claiming its sixth consecutive win at Barwon. Director of rowing Nick Bartlett said the results reflected the strength, depth, and consistency of the school’s rowing program.
“The Barwon Regatta is always a great opportunity to see the payoff from the hard work our students put in during rowing camp earlier in January,” Bartlett said.
He added that achieving four wins in challenging hot conditions exceeded expectations.
“To come away with four wins in these conditions is exceptional, and the highest number of wins we’ve achieved at this regatta in the past 20 years. These results bode extremely well as we turn our focus to the upcoming New South Wales and Victorian State Championships,” he said.
Gippsland Grammar’s rowing program continues to build a strong reputation for developing skilled, resilient, and committed athletes, supported by a culture of teamwork, discipline, and long-term program success.
The team will next compete at the ANU Regatta in Canberra on February 13–14, Rowing Victoria’s Junior School State Championships in Geelong on February 21, and the New South Wales State Championships at the Sydney International Regatta Centre from February 20–22.
