Buchan claimed an important win over Lakes Entrance in round 16 of the Bairnsdale Cricket Association “B” grade competition at the
Lakes Entrance Recreation Reserve last Saturday.
Sent in to bat, Lakes Entrance posted 4/160 from its full 40 overs — the first time this season the Seagulls have batted through their entire allocation.
Captain James Daly led from the front with 53 from 47 deliveries, striking eight boundaries. Ryan Summerton was unbeaten on 48, while Brett Boyd contributed a steady 21 at the top of the order. Buchan skipper
Jim Davidson was the most effective of the bowlers, finishing with 2/20.
In reply, the Cavemen — needing victory to keep their finals hopes alive — chased down the target in the 28th over for the loss
of four wickets. Opener James Greenwood produced a match-winning innings
of 104 from 92 balls,
including 17 boundaries and three sixes.
Daly (2/43) and Summerton (2/24) were the multiple wicket-takers for Lakes Entrance. Much attention centred on Jack Reggardo following his recent five-wicket haul, but he was unable to repeat the feat, conceding 21 runs from his three overs with the new ball.
Lakes Entrance will look to return to the winners’ list this week when it faces bottom side Lindenow South Glenaladale at the Glenaladale Recreation Reserve. The Seagulls have won two of the three meetings between the sides this season, including their round five clash.
In junior cricket, the under 13 competition concluded last Friday night with mixed results for Lakes Entrance. The Maroon side defeated West Bairnsdale by 43 runs at Bairnsdale City Oval, restricting the home side to 4/79 before compiling 5/122. Lucas Walker (15), Tyler Purcell (10), Mack Anderson (14), Declan Bills (11) and Eddie Stapleton (12) were among the runs.
The White team fell just short in a thriller against Meerlieu at Bairnsdale Primary School. After posting 5/81, with Jesse Downing top-scoring with 11 not out, Lakes Entrance saw Meerlieu reach 7/83 in the final
over to secure a two-run victory. Brok Kennedy and Tanner O’Donnell claimed two wickets apiece.
The Lakes Entrance Cricket Club acknowledged the efforts of junior coordinator Leigh Walker and coaches Scott Tite and Ollie Chaplin, with junior presentations to be held this Saturday ahead of the “A” grade match against Orbost.
