The 2026 singles championship at the Lakes Entrance Croquet Club was held over two mornings last week, with warm weather providing ideal conditions for the event. Twelve members competed across two sections, “A” and “B” grade, with six players in each, and the level play format produced some extremely close and entertaining matches.
This year’s singles champions are Ivana Thomson in “A” grade and Norm Carter in “B” grade. Runners-up were Rhonda Smith and Lynley Mitchell respectively. Thomson and Smith each recorded four wins and one loss, but Thomson’s superior net hoops (+9 compared with Smith’s +6) secured her the title. In “B” grade, Carter claimed the championship with five wins, defeating Mitchell in the final round to clinch the title.
Ken and Karin Brown received encouragement awards for their first competitive championship at the club.
The Lakes Entrance Croquet Club will host its doubles championship later this month, followed by the annual singles tournament from February 28 to March 1, offering spectacular viewing for anyone wishing to see golf croquet in action. The club welcomes new players to experience the game, which is a passive and strategic sport enjoyed by all age groups.
The club’s courts are located near the tennis club and Aquadome, off Palmers Road, with visitors welcome Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday mornings from 9.30am to just before lunchtime. Friday evenings from 3pm to 6.30pm have also become popular for social play and learning the game.
