Pedestrian safety on one of Lakes Entrance’s busiest commercial strips is set for a major upgrade.
Council last night was expected to award a contract for the construction of two new raised pedestrian crossings on Church Street.
The project, funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) through the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program, will see crossings installed near the intersections of Mechanics Street and Bulmer Street. The upgrades will include flashing lights at Mechanics Street and improved public lighting.
While the project was initiated by the Lakes Entrance Action and Development Association (LEADA), it hasn’t been without discussion. Ambulance Victoria raised concerns regarding potential traffic congestion on Church Street, which has become a primary access route.
However, TAC designers and council officers maintain that the safety benefits for the high number of elderly pedestrians and tourists in the precinct outweigh the “accepted” congestion common in school and shopping zones.
