A treasured piece of family history has been given a new lease on life thanks to the craftsmanship and community spirit of the Twin Rivers Men’s Shed.
In early December 2025, local resident Rosemary approached the Johnsonville-based Men’s Shed with a special request: could they restore a child’s pedal racing car that had been part of her family for generations?
The pedal car, built more than 85 years ago by Rosemary’s father, had been handed down through the family and enjoyed by her siblings and their children, who spent countless hours riding it around the family farm. Over time, as the children grew older, the car was forgotten and eventually lost beneath a thick tangle of
blackberry bushes.
It was only rediscovered recently during a property clean-up, damaged by years of exposure but still rich with sentimental value.
The Twin Rivers Men’s Shed members did not hesitate to accept the challenge.
After discussing the best approach, the team carefully cleaned the original structure, fabricated new parts to replace missing components, and repaired or adjusted what could be saved. Existing panels were cleaned and preserved, with a strong focus on retaining the character of the original build.
Much of the metalwork was carried out by shed member Don, supported by other members who were keen to lend advice and a helping hand. Once reassembled, the pedal car was finished with a fresh coat of paint, bringing the historic piece back to life.
The restored car was presented to Rosemary in January this year, a moment that proved deeply emotional. She was overwhelmed by
the quality of the workmanship and the care taken to honour the memories attached to the car.
Members of the Twin Rivers Men’s Shed said they were proud to be able to help a local community member and give something meaningful back
to the district.
The Twin Rivers Men’s Shed is located at 1754 Princes Highway, Johnsonville, and is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am.
