Five CHC Helicopter personnel who were stationed at the East Sale RAAF Base during the 2019–20 Black Summer Bushfires have been recognised with the National Emergency Medal for their outstanding service in responding to one of Australia’s worst natural disasters.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester presented the medals during a ceremony at the East Sale RAAF Base, attended by CHC Helicopter colleagues and Deputy Emergency Management Commissioner Brett Boatman.

CHC Helicopter operates critical search and rescue (SAR) and emergency medical services (EMS) across Gippsland, providing 24/7, all-weather response from its East Sale base.

Using advanced aircraft such as the AW139, crews conduct inland and water-based rescue operations, delivering rapid support during medical emergencies and disaster response situations.

Mr Chester said the contribution of emergency aviation crews during the Black Summer Bushfires was vital to protecting lives and supporting isolated communities.

“We will be forever grateful to those who answered the call and put themselves in harm’s way to assist communities during an incredibly challenging time,” Mr Chester said.

“The 2019–20 bushfires tested our region’s resources, and we saw extraordinary courage and professionalism from emergency services and defence force personnel on the ground, in the air and at sea.”

Mr Chester said the National Emergency Medal was an important way to acknowledge sustained service during nationally significant emergencies.

“This medal recognises the dedication shown by those who went above and beyond to protect others,” he said.

“I congratulate each of the recipients on this well-deserved honour. Your service and commitment to keeping Gippslanders safe will not be forgotten.”

The following CHC Helicopter personnel were awarded the National Emergency Medal:

– Gregory Fry

– Vanessa Noble

– Bart Bretherton

– Michael Lutz

– Peter McDonnell
