Lakes Entrance’s push for a Bairnsdale Cricket Association finals berth has suffered a major blow after a round 14 defeat to St Marys Nagle at Nagle College, leaving the Seagulls’ hopes hanging by a thread.
With two rounds remaining, Lakes Entrance is still mathematically in contention, but would require convincing wins in its final two matches and other results to fall its way.
Having struggled to string together consecutive victories this season, the task now appears unlikely.
Under pressure in a must-win clash against a side with just two victories for the year, the Seagulls were undone by a dominant individual performance from Nagle skipper Ricky Tatnell.
Tatnell backed up his 7/53 from 25 overs on day one with a match-winning, unbeaten 112 on day two, almost single-handedly steering his side to victory.
He was the only Nagle player to reach double figures, compiling his century from 132 balls with 10 boundaries and two sixes.
Resuming at 3/20, Nagle lost Brayden McCarrey early on day two, and Lakes Entrance maintained pressure with regular wickets. However, they could not dislodge the in-form Tatnell.
When Kaleb Day removed Brendan Gallus to leave the Saints at 7/79, the Seagulls sensed victory, but Tatnell dug in, blending defence and aggression while receiving valuable support from the lower order.
Reece Carstairs contributed eight from 22 balls in a 48-run stand for the eighth wicket, and although Lakes fought back to make it 8/127, an unbroken ninth-wicket partnership of 44 between Tatnell and Danny Hack (seven from 48) carried the Saints to a two-wicket win with plenty of time remaining.
Scott Tite (2/32), Noah Dodd (2/21) and Ollie Chaplin (2/29) each claimed multiple wickets for Lakes Entrance.
The Seagulls now face a crucial away clash against Paynesville at AJ Freeman Reserve, where defeat would end their finals chances mathematically.
Lakes Entrance currently sits sixth on the ladder, with victory equally important for both sides as the season nears its conclusion.
