Lakes Entrance Mechanics Hall will hold a fundraising Art and Craft De-stash and Clearance Market on Sunday, February 15, from 9 am to 2 pm, bringing makers and craft enthusiasts together from across East Gippsland.
The market will feature stalls from local and regional creators selling excess craft supplies, equipment, patterns, and more. Visitors are expected to travel from as far afield as Mornington Peninsula, Berwick, Marlo, and Mallacoota.
“If you’re thinking about starting a new craft hobby, come and talk to the makers and see what you can purchase to kickstart your interest,” said Maria Armistead from the
Mechanics Hall.
“Or maybe you just need to build up your existing craft supplies.”
The Mechanics Hall has long been a vital community hub, serving as a refuge during the 2019–2020 bushfires and hosting events ranging from theatrical productions, sporting events, and indoor markets, to weddings, flower shows, and even polling during elections.
Contrary to popular belief, the hall is managed by a volunteer community committee, not the East Gippsland Shire Council. The committee handles bookings, fees, and maintenance, ensuring the building remains operational and financially sustainable.
“Recently, two new members joined the committee and took on bookings and invoicing, giving the Hall a boost,” Maria said.
“But we now urgently need a secretary. If you can spare an hour or two once a month, we’d love to hear from you. We’re also keen for ideas on fundraising and making better use of the Hall.”
Volunteers and community-minded residents can contact president Max or the bookings team Chris or Maria (details available at the Lakes Post office).
Without continued community support, the hall’s day-to-day management may revert to the Shire Council, risking the loss of this important local asset.
