Lakes Entrance CFA Brigade members were recently called to an abandoned campfire on a remote section of the North Arm foreshore, near the end of Capes Road.
What initially appeared minor turned out to be far more serious, involving a large amount of dumped rubbish, fibreglass, aerosol cans, foam, timber, and a truck battery. This material had been set alight, causing a fire that spread along the foreshore.
“Once fires start, they can move quickly and unpredictably,” a Brigade member said.
“The crew dealt with this one quickly, but given recent Total Fire Ban days and the hot, dry conditions, the outcome could have been far worse, threatening nearby homes, infrastructure, livelihoods and potentially lives.”
Lakes Entrance Brigade Captain Phil Loukes emphasised that fire safety is a community responsibility. “Preventing incidents like this relies on awareness, respect and accountability. Any fires should be reported immediately by calling Triple Zero.”
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The community is reminded that we are still in the declared Fire Danger Period, with restrictions on outdoor fires. Burning rubbish is strictly prohibited, and no fires are allowed on Total Fire Ban days.
