The Gippsland Stars are working hard in preparation for the upcoming Victorian Netball League (VNL) season, aiming for a productive campaign after finishing 12th on the championship ladder in 2025.
Significant effort has gone into increasing depth in the championship line-up, with several local talents returning and new recruits added to bolster the squad. New additions include Sam Silvester (North East Blaze), Abby Williams (Peninsula Waves), Abbey Barrientos, Keighley Starrett (Hawks Netball), Jordan Pyle (Wilson Storage Southern Saints), and Hollie Bugeja (23 and under).
They will join returning squad members Sally Deller, Stacie Gardiner, Katie Fone, Sophie Lecchino, Alison Dwyer, Shannon Blackman, Daisy Hill, Akayla Peterson, and Ramayer Keilty.
The Stars faced challenges in their inaugural 2025 season, losing key shooters Hill (knee) and Gardiner (pregnancy), which tested the squad’s depth. With both players returning to full fitness and Silvester bringing her reputation as an accurate shooter, the attacking end is suddenly much stronger. Williams, with previous state team and championship division experience, adds speed and depth to the attack. Keilty provides versatility, able to slot in at either end of the court.
The midcourt will benefit from stability led by 2025 best and fairest winner Shannon Blackman, who can cover all three midcourt positions. She will be supported by newcomers Starrett and Barrientos, both bringing valuable VNL experience. Katie Fone will again provide strong cover across the midcourt, while Hollie Bugeja steps up to the championship-level squad after a standout year in the Gippsland League with Moe.
At the defensive end, Sally Deller is preparing for a big season after winning the team’s coaches’ MVP award in 2025. She will be supported by Bairnsdale teammate Alison Dwyer, elevated from training partner, while Akayla Peterson looks fit after an injury-affected 2025, adding another key defensive option.
With a strengthened squad across all areas of the court, the Gippsland Stars are aiming to climb the ladder and make a strong impact in the 2026 VNL season.
