GIPPSLAND POLICE have recently received several reports of counterfeit Australian currency circulating in the Latrobe area. Businesses and consumers are being urged to remain vigilant. Some counterfeit notes are of high quality, but most still look or feel slightly “off.” Anyone who comes across a suspect banknote is advised to store it safely, handle it as little as possible, and place it in an envelope. Record any relevant information about how it came into your possession, and report it to your local police station as soon as possible. Anyone with information about the production of counterfeit currency is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

More than a third of cases occurred in regional Victoria, where residents are 51 per cent more likely to be diagnosed and 35 per cent more likely to die from melanoma than city dwellers. Treatments for non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, also increased, with 170,743 treatments recorded in 2024, up from 164,736 in 2023. SEASPRAY: Campers recently encountered an eastern brown snake, the second most venomous land snake in the world. Thankfully the snake was given space to move about without feeling threatened. If you see a snake out in the bush while camping, leave it to do its own thing in its home. Be aware of their likely presence but keep doing your thing. Don’t try to move or harm them, that is illegal and it only increases your risks. Snakes are amazing creatures and play an essential role in the environment. (PS)
