The Lakes Entrance Tennis Club (LETC) hosted its second annual New Year’s Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, January 3, drawing 58 players to the courts on a sunny summer day — an increase of 20 participants from last year, highlighting the sport’s growing appeal.
Billed as a “Friendly Tournament,” the event attracted competitors from across Victoria, including the Manningham Pickleball Club in Doncaster and the Sale Pickleball Club, led by highly-rated player Christine Shingles. They faced off against 17 eager locals, all keen to showcase their skills.
Committee member Shannon Murdoch, who designed the tournament, said it was structured to give all participants plenty of matches at their respective skill levels. Nicola Brodie, visiting from Townsville, generously volunteered to manage the scoring desk.
“Matches were played in a very sporting manner, with great etiquette even when players of differing levels faced off,” LETC president Mike Spruzen said.
“There were some cracking contests, with high-rated players battling it out with hard drives, soft drinks, and clever strategy.”
Murdoch claimed the men’s title with an impressive 89 per cent win ratio, ahead of Neale Longstaff (78 per cent) from Leongatha, while Shingles secured the ladies’ crown with an 89 per cent win ratio, defeating Di Arnott (67 per cent) from Sale. Club members provided a generous lunch for all players, adding to the community spirit of the day.
“After just three years, pickleball has firmly established itself at Lakes Entrance Tennis Club and in the local community,” Spruzen said.
“It is inclusive, social, and offers a chance to meet and play with like-minded people, both locals and visitors enjoying our beautiful coastal town.”
