Gippsland Grammar students and families are set to reap the rewards of a new Board-approved initiative designed to support boarding families during the current challenging economic climate.
From 2026, the regional independent school will introduce ‘Rewarding Boarding’; a long-term incentive offering families a year of free boarding.
Families who commit to a full six-year boarding pathway from year seven to year 12 will have their year 12 boarding fees fully waived. As Gippsland Grammar’s Board describes it: “Pay for five, receive one free.”
Boarding at Gippsland Grammar offers students a supportive and enriching environment in which to thrive academically, socially and personally. The close-knit boarding community fosters independence, resilience and lifelong friendships, ensuring every student feels at home while achieving their personal best at school.
The school’s 2025 boarding captain Lucy Hodges, from Lakes Entrance loved her boarding experience. As a successful rower who medalled at the National Rowing Championships this year, Lucy was also awarded school colours and a principal’s award for her accomplishments during the end-of-year celebrations.
“Boarding at Blackwood House enabled me to actively participate in rowing season,”
Lucy said.
“Boarding also allowed me to study effectively and receive tutoring support, which has been especially important during year 12.
“My favourite part of boarding has been spending time with my friends. I would recommend boarding to anyone.”
Gippsland Grammar principal, Dr Paul Walton, said boarding had been at the heart of the School’s community for more than a century, welcoming students from across Gippsland and beyond.
“This initiative recognises the long-term commitment families make and ensures that boarding remains accessible and rewarding
for students who choose to complete their
journey with us through to year 12,”
Dr Walton said.
“It’s such a great opportunity for families regardless of the distance they live from
our school.”
Gippsland Grammar boarders live at Blackwood House, a 50-bed, purpose-designed boarding facility located a short walk from the Garnsey Campus ovals. Students enjoy twin-share en suite accommodation, evening
study and tutoring support, and a balanced routine that prioritises study, rest
and recreation.
A full-time chef prepares three home-cooked meals each day, along with snacks and a special birthday cake for every student on their special day. Boarding staff also transport students to part-time work, community activities and sporting commitments outside of school hours.
Gippsland Grammar offers a range of boarding options to suit different family needs, including full-time boarding and more flexible arrangements for students who may travel long distances or have changing commitments. This flexibility allows families to combine the benefits of boarding with home life, while ensuring students receive consistent academic and pastoral support.
