AFL Gippsland has reported that 2025 was a landmark year for football across Gippsland, defined by growth in participation, stronger pathways, enhanced capability building and an unwavering commitment from volunteers and community clubs.
Participation was a major highlight of 2025, with more than 17,000 people playing football across Gippsland.
This growth reflects the collective efforts of clubs, leagues, schools, volunteers and partners to ensure football remains accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for participants of all ages and abilities.
From entry-level programs to senior competitions, Gippsland continues to demonstrate the strength of football as a cornerstone of community connection.
Auskick and Superkick programs continued to thrive in 2025, playing a critical role in introducing young people to football and supporting early skill development, confidence and enjoyment.
Strong participation numbers across both programs reinforced their importance as the starting point of the football pathway and a vital feeder into junior club football for communities right across the region.
The Gippsland Junior Football Retention Project was a key strategic project in 2025.
Through surveys, forums and direct engagement with clubs and leagues, valuable insights were gathered to better understand how to retain young people – particularly in the 14–18 age group.
This work is shaping future competition planning, coach education and club support initiatives, ensuring pathways remain flexible, engaging and aligned with the needs of young players.
Coach development took a significant step forward in 2025 with the introduction of the Gippsland Coaching Academy, providing local coaches with access to high-quality education, mentoring and development opportunities.
In addition, the Female Coaching Academy delivered targeted support for women coaches, helping build confidence, capability and connection while strengthening the female coaching pipeline across Gippsland.
These academies are critical in improving player experiences and ensuring strong, consistent coaching environments at all levels of the game.
Women and girls football continued to gain momentum in 2025, supported by stronger collaboration, clearer pathways and improved governance structures.
A major milestone was the continued alignment and partnership work between Female Football Gippsland and the Gippsland League, strengthening strategic planning and creating more sustainable outcomes for female football across the region.
Leadership and development opportunities, including AFL Victoria’s Lead Your Way program, further supported women to step into key roles within clubs, leagues and umpiring groups.
Gippsland proudly hosted Gippsland Gather Round in 2025, showcasing the strength of regional football and bringing together communities to celebrate the game.
Community Camps also delivered significant impact, with AFL clubs visiting the region to engage schools, clubs and young people through clinics, forums and player appearances – creating memorable experiences and reinforcing football’s role in community wellbeing.
It was a standout year for funding success across Gippsland, with clubs securing support through numerous grant programs, including Telstra Footy Country Grants, Toyota Good for Footy and TAC Club Rewards, among others.
Those grants enabled clubs to invest in facilities, equipment, uniforms and programs – supporting safer environments, improved accessibility and greater capacity to grow participation.
At the centre of every success in 2025 were Gippsland’s volunteers, from committee members and coaches to umpires, team managers, canteen workers and parents, countless hours were dedicated to supporting clubs and participants.
Their passion, generosity and commitment underpin everything that happens across competitions and AFL Gippsland extends its sincere thanks to every volunteer for their contribution to a successful and memorable year.
