Surf Life Saving Lakes Entrance is celebrating the extraordinary milestone of Murray Colvin, who has completed 50 years of dedicated service to lifesaving and community safety.
Mr Colvin started his lifesaving journey in 1975, earning his Bronze Medallion the following year. Since then he has served in a wide range of frontline and leadership roles, including lifeguard supervisor for Gippsland, club captain, chief instructor, training officer, and rescue watercraft operator.
His commitment has extended beyond Lakes Entrance, with deployments across Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
Over five decades, Mr Colvin has played a pivotal role in shaping lifesaving operations in Gippsland.
As lifesaving operations officer for Life Saving Victoria, he has overseen patrols, coordinated emergency responses and mentored generations of lifesavers. His calm leadership and technical expertise have been vital in hazardous environments such as the Lakes Entrance bar crossing, ensuring safer outcomes for both the public and fellow lifesavers.
Mr Colvin’s contribution has not only been operational but also innovative. He was involved in the early Trial Lifeguard Program at Lakes Entrance, which led to the permanent establishment of professional lifeguard services in the region.
He has also been instrumental in training and assessing lifesaving personnel, embedding resilience and operational excellence across Gippsland.
“Murray’s service is a testament to the values of surf life saving — courage, commitment and community. His leadership has strengthened our club and inspired countless members over the years,” club president Keith Richardson said.
Mr Colvin continues to serve actively as a life guard rescue water craft operator, trainer and mentor, reflecting his enduring passion for lifesaving and community protection.
His 50 years of service stand as an outstanding example of dedication and impact, both locally and nationally.
