Sitting on top

29 October 2025
in Sport

Defending champion, Lakes Entrance, is in familiar territory, perched on top of the Gippsland Bowls Region midweek pennant ladder after two completed rounds.

Lakes Entrance and Sale are the only unbeaten sides with Metung and Maffra occupying third and fourth on the ladder, the only other sides to have tasted success thus far.

Lakes Entrance welcomed first round winner Metung and was victorious 67-44, primarily off the back of a sensational 36-9 rink win by Wallace Mason, Jack Light, Bill Rowley and Kevin Brown, whose haul was highlighted by five shots on the eighth end.

Mike McKay, Jenny Dowie, Jim Northe and Kevin Dowie had a great battle with Metung’s Robert Garbutt, Christine Elliott, Ronald McDonald and Kieran Casey, the rink ending in a 16-16 draw.

The Lakes quartet did well to work back from 15-10 down, getting two shots on the final end to salvage a draw.

Metung’s Leah Cameron, Jeff Elliott, David Roberts and the energetic Jack Sharman pocketing the other rink, 19-15, holding off a late charge from Joanne Martin, Glenn Barker, Kevin Watson and Eric Spence.

In division two, Lakes Entrance 2 was victorious in the local derby over Lakes Entrance 3, 78-51.

The victory sees Lakes 2 sitting on top of the ladder and Lakes 3 in fifth.

Michael Bratt, Carol Hurren, John Hurren and Peter Alves Veira led the charge for Lakes 2, saluting 32-14, well supported by Peter Spark, Jacinta Wilson, Peter Howie and Samuel Berlingeri, 25-16 winners.

The final rink was drawn (21-21), between Lakes 3s Angelo Alonso, Robert Wilson, Bill Gilbert and Clement Hochkins, and Lakes 2s Lynton Rathjen, Rob Norder, Stan Short and Sharon Hall.

Mixed results in division three, with Lakes Entrance 4, making the trip to Bairnsdale Golf, and returning home 38-32 winners, while Lakes 5 was no match for Bairnsdale 4 in their road trip, outclassed 67-19.

Lakes Entrance 4 has won both its matches this season and is currently third on the ladder. Its victory was set up by Ian Gray, Suzanne Light, Stephen Adams and Ross Irvine who were winners 23-16.

Lakes Entrance 5 is currently seventh on the ladder, chasing its first victory for the season.
