Last week, the Lakes Entrance Community Sewing Group, auspiced by the Lions Club of Gippsland Lakes Lionesses, had the pleasure of welcoming an intern from Chemist Warehouse, Nicole Inocentes, who delivered a thoughtful and informative presentation on arthritis and how to manage the condition.
As many of the sewing group members are passionate lifelong creators, her insights were both timely and relevant, offering practical advice on how to continue doing what they love while caring for their joints and overall wellbeing.
“Nicole’s talk reminded us that while we come together around fabric, thread, and creativity, our group is about so much more than sewing. It’s about community, connection and care, values that lie at the very heart of what we do,” one of the organisers, Jo Buckler, said.
“Over the past year, our membership has grown significantly, a clear sign that more people are looking not only for creative outlets but also for meaningful social connection. Our group has become a space where people can share skills, stories and smiles and which brings incredible value to our town.
“Whether it’s sewing quilts for those in need, making comfort items for local hospitals, or simply offering a warm cup of tea and conversation, our group continues to give back to the community in countless ways. We are proud to contribute both practical support and emotional warmth to those around us.
“We also recognise the profound impact that belonging to a creative group can have on mental health and wellbeing. In a world that moves fast, taking time to make something by hand, and doing it alongside others, offers a sense of peace, purpose and pride that is hard to find elsewhere.
“As we look ahead, we are excited to continue growing, learning, and supporting each other. Nicole’s presentation was a valuable reminder that health and creativity go hand in hand, and that with a little care and knowledge, we can keep doing what we love for years to come,” Jo said.
Feel free to pop in or contact the group for more information about what they do. They meet at the Coast Guard Building on the Esplanade in Lakes Entrance every Tuesday, from 10am until 1pm.
