The Lions Junior Public Speaking East Gippsland finals were held at the Lakes Entrance Mechanics Hall last Wednesday night with a large crowd of family, teachers and community members in attendance.
The event is organised by the Lions Club of Gippsland Lakes Lionesses with students from Lakes Entrance Primary, Metung Primary, St Brendan’s Primary and St Mary’s Catholic Primary being involved. Each school had chosen two students to represent them in the grade three/four category and the grade five/six. All schools should be proud of these students who represented their schools impeccably.
Lioness secretary Cynthia Robinson was emcee for the evening and put all students at ease.
This year’s topic for the grade three/fours was ‘A Creative Invention’ – if you created a new invention what would it be, made of what, what would it be for and who would use it. Grade five/six topic was ‘Technology’ – The impact of fast-moving technology in our lives and the environment. Is technology moving too fast for humans? Choose any technology you are aware of and elaborate on that.
The students chose a variety of content and all had prepared well and spoke eloquently. The winner of the grade three/four section was Sathi Mendis from Metung Primary School and the grade five/six was Noah Gardam from St Mary’s Primary School in Bairnsdale.
These two students will now go to the zone final in Trafalgar. If they are successful there, they proceed to the finals at the District Convention in Warragul in October.
After presentations of certificates to all students involved, supper was enjoyed by all.
