This National Meals on Wheels Day, Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH) is celebrating its volunteers who make this essential service possible, and highlighting the vital role Meals on Wheels continues to play in the lives of people across East Gippsland.
Under this year’s theme, “Aged Care You Can Count On”, Meals on Wheels is proudly reaffirming its promise to be a trusted, reliable presence in the lives of older East Gippslanders.
Each day, Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver freshly prepared meals and check in on clients. These daily visits offer much more than nutrition: they bring connection, reassurance, and the support people need to continue living independently in their own homes.
“Meals on Wheels isn’t just a service, it’s a lifeline,” Karren Hackling, volunteer engagement officer at GLCH, said.
“Our promise is simple: to show up, nourish and care.”
One of the many dedicated volunteers is Karl Borelli from Lakes Entrance, who says it’s the connections
he makes that keep him coming back.
“The main reason I enjoy doing Meals on Wheels is the interaction with the clients I meet,” Karl said.
“I kind of know them all and I also like seeing their animals.
“I like dropping by to say hello. It doesn’t take much out of my day, and it is rewarding to have that interaction with them all. I find everyone is actually very grateful and they like to see me when I arrive.”
Ms Hackling said Meals on Wheels is about more than just food – it’s about community.
“We’re proud to be part of something bigger – a movement that’s built on compassion, trust and community spirit,” she said.
“On National Meals on Wheels Day, we celebrate the people who make this service what it is – our amazing volunteers.”
GLCH is always on the lookout for individuals or businesses willing to give
up just a few hours of their time, grab an esky and help deliver meals.
You can volunteer as much or as little time as you want – once a week, once a fortnight, a month – whatever suits you.
