The Social Exercise and Walking Football program has kicked off in Lakes Entrance with a regular enthusiastic group enjoying weekly exercise, warm up and stretching, ball skill sessions and fun small sided games.
The program is held every Tuesday at 10am indoors at the Youth and Recreation Centre in Carpenter Street.
There are modified rules of play, with no running, kicking the ball low and no contact, which enables everyone over the age of 50, and of all abilities to play safely.
Convenor Con Constantinou says the program is ground-breaking.
“This program is unique here in East Gippsland and is growing in popularity,” Constantinou said.
For the more competitive, Walking Football is included as a sport in the Australian Masters Games.
The Walking Football World Cup will be held in Brisbane next year.
Program leaders, Constantinou and Rachel Higgins are part of the combined mixed team of Whittlesea and Lakes Entrance going to the Australian Masters Games, to be held in Canberra during October.
Constantinou was involved in setting up the first regular Walking Football program in Australia at Mill Park, in partnership with Whittlesea U3A and City of Whittlesea.
All are welcome to join in the Walking Football sessions on a Tuesday morning, just drop in and check it out.
