The August ride for the Tambo Upper Trail Riding Club will be a trail ride to the High Country Hooch Distillery in Glenaladale.
Anne Rees will lead the club from The Barn at Calajero this Sunday, August 17.
Participants will enjoy an undulating two-hour ride through pine plantation, leading to native bush land with scenic views across open hill country. They will arrive at the distillery for tastings of Hooch, infused with flavours of the High Country while listening to the story of how the spirits are made.
Partners and friends are welcome to meet up with the riders at the distillery for lunch. The riders will then mount up for an hour-ride returning to the floats for afternoon tea.
The club’s July ride left from the picturesque Avon-Mt Hedrick camping reserve near Valencia Creek. The ride had been in doubt due to flooding of the Avon River. The low level access crossing to the starting point in the Avon-Mt Hedrick Scenic Reserve had been inundated but fortunately cleared in time for the ride.
A good number of riders turned up despite the recent cold, wet and blustery conditions. The route offered a variety of terrain and included a stop at the gravesite memorial of George Bowen who died in 1888. The site is hidden away in thick bush but made an interesting detour.
First-time riders with the club were Nathan and Nadine Marshall. They made the trip down from Orbost and had a wonderful ride.
Also joining in for the first time was Jade Thomas from Glengarry on her lovely Gypsey Cob.
At the recent club annual general meeting the 2025/26 calendar of rides was finalised. There will be the usual regular rides in areas including Flaggy Creek, Glenaladale, Valencia Creek, Fernbank, Melwood, Colquhoun, Mt Taylor.
Feature rides are the annual Christmas lunch ride at Sarsfield and a two-day camp based north of Swan Reach, bordering the Colquhoun Forest. Lyn King and Julie Reading will be leading at Briagolong and Christa Treasure will take the group back to her popular ride in the Mitchell River area.
There will also be some “impromptu” rides scheduled in various areas. Calendars will be available at local saddlers and horse associated stores.
For more details on the ride contact the club Facebook page. Tambo rides are held on the third Sunday of every month and are suitable for most standards. Visitors are welcome and juniors are also encouraged but must be accompanied by a guardian and able to ride independently.
