The Women’s Recreational Fishing League (WRFL) hosted its first session in East Gippsland at the Nicholson Angling Clubrooms last week under the tutelage local tournament angler and Bairnsdale Siren, Ruth Beeby.
The event was a huge success with eight ladies in attendance and already a trio keen to attend the next session on September 6 at the Nicholson Angling Club.
The WRFL is designed to encourage more women to participate in fishing, with creator and president of WRFL, Jo Starling, believes in the power of fishing to change lives.
“WRFL empowers women by breaking down limiting self-beliefs and supporting their participation and success in the traditionally male-dominated sport of competitive angling,” Starling said.
Competitive fishing teaches vital skills such as self-reliance, self-efficacy and self-confidence, with these lessons extending far beyond the water, helping women tackle life’s challenges with newfound strength and assurance.
While younger women are increasingly raised in environments that promote gender equity, many older women in today’s workforce were not.
These women often confront biases and limiting beliefs that stem from outdated gender roles, with the WRFL committed to breaking down these barriers by providing a supportive and empowering environment.
Beeby has just returned to the water after a significant leg injury and certainly hasn’t lost it, landing a 43 centimetre bream from her trusty kayak.
