The Dinner Plain Sled Dog Sprint is back for another year, with the event running on Saturday, August 9 and Sunday, August 10.
As it has for more than 25 years, this year’s event is promised to bring all the thrills, spills, and, of course, dogs.
Mushers from State and Territory (except the NT) flock to the Dinner Plain Village each winter to compete on the X country trails.
The dog teams number from one to six and are separated into ‘classes’ and run two heats over the two days.
The open class ‘competitive’ races have two-dog, three-dog, four-dog, six and eight-dog teams.
There is typically between 10-20 teams in each class.
The teams then line up and run out in one-minute intervals. The faster teams will pass the slower teams, with the faster teams seeded to run out first in the second heat.
The winners receive prizes and trophies.
There is also a touring/social class which is good for beginners or mushers who want to take their older dogs out for a run.
For younger kids or families, there’s the mini musher sprint, where an adult can take a child under 12 out on a sled with up to
two dogs.
Junior mushers can also participate and build their skills and confidence with the two-dog junior class.
Racing kicks off at 9am and finishes at 2pm on both days, with spectators encouraged to view the dog teams at the left side of the Dinner Plain front entry.
Attendees are also asked to not bring their own dog/s to the event.
