MEERLIEU: It was a great show of community spirit at the recent monthly Gather and Grow meeting at the community garden. The strawberry pipes were constructed and filled with soil, ready for planting strawberries at next month's meeting. Carrots and snow peas were picked and the garden beds were weeded. Then it was up to the top oval where bare-rooted Claret Ashes and Golden Elms were planted, trees that will one day provide much-needed shade for generations to come. (PS)

Gippsland East MP, Tim Bull, who has regularly visited the site, said members had made it very clear “crunch time was approaching”. “Both the committee and I have made approaches to Minister Dimopoulos as this is one of the town’s premier tourist attractions but it seems this government can always find money for major city attractions, but when it comes to supporting these smaller community-based projects there is scant support,” Bull said. The local committee has raised just on $400,000, which is an incredible effort in itself, towards a total cost of $1.2 million.

OMEO

THE DAYS MIGHT be getting longer, but winter’s chill is still going strong. And while all roads might not look like Arendelle, icy roads are still a real risk. So remember to check the weather and road conditions, as they can change quickly. Drive with care, hands on the wheel, go easy on the accelerator to avoid wheel spin. Stick to light beams in the mist, as high beams won’t help. ⁣If visibility drops, pull over safely, switch on your hazard lights and keep the engine running. ⁣And if you hit ice, stay calm and brake gently to regain traction.⁣ When on the roads remember to stay cool, calm and in control. If you are heading into a designated alpine area, legally required snow chains must be carried and fitted when directed.

SEASPRAY

TOWN FOLK HAVE recently said no to offshore wind farms within 25 kilometres of shore. More than 120 people attended the Seaspray Ratepayers Association (SRA) meeting at the Surf Club and overwhelmingly passed a motion for the official formation of a subcommittee to represent the community’s interests with regards to offshore wind farms in the vicinity of Seaspray and the Honeysuckles. On behalf of the Seaspray community, the subcommittee, known as the Seaspray Windfarm Strategy Group (SWSG) supports renewable energy and offshore wind farms located more than 25 kilometre from shore. The SWSG does not support the proposed Blue Mackerel offshore wind project, which is slated for the waters 10 kilometre from Seaspray, directly in front of the Seaspray Surf Club. The SWSG believes the region bears all the risk for none of the benefit and it seeks to protect Seaspray’s visual amenity, environment and social license. As well as hearing from Dave Madden, Marty Jackson and Fiona Lawrence from the SWSG, the meeting also heard from Noeline Andrew, who is representing the SRO at the Gippsland Offshore Wind Community Assembly, Maree Howard from Better Transmissions Gippsland and Roger from ‘No Turbines Gippsland’. The proposed Blue Mackerel wind farm will include 70 turbines that are 300 metre high. For context the oil rigs also visible from Seaspray are located 20 kilometres from shore and are 30 metres high. The next meeting of the SRO will be held on Saturday, August 9 at 11am at the surf club.

SET OVER THREE incredible days, the Gippsland Writers Festival (August 1-3) is a celebration of story for all ages. Organisers believe that stories have the power to connect us, challenge perspectives and build a more inclusive and understanding world. With the support of local, State and Federal governments and arts agencies, the festival is growing every year and now encompasses three amazing days of literary activities, discussion panels and writing workshops. GLENMAGGIE: Last Wednesday Wellington Shire Council mayor councillor Scott Rossetti joined local emergency services at Blores Hill to check out one of Wellington’s new emergency markers – now installed at 16 popular outdoor spots across the shire. These green signs might not look like much, but they can be lifesavers. Each one has a unique code that links directly to Triple Zero (000) and helps emergency crews find you faster, especially in remote or hard-to-describe places. You will now spot them at locations like Blores Hill, Blue Pools, Arbuckle Junction and Pinnacles Lookout. This project is a great example of what can be achieved when council teams up with CFA, Vic Police, Ambulance Victoria, VIC SES and Parks Victoria to put safety first. (PS)
LAKE TYERS: Last week members from the Lakes Entrance Police, East Gippsland and Wellington Proactive Policing Unit attended the NAIDOC Week family fun day at the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust to help celebrate the last day of the 2025 NAIDOC Week. It was a fun day with a lot of activities for all to join in and participate. (PS)
WOODSIDE: The installation of nesting boxes for the endangered Greater Gliders is not for the faint-hearted, given that you are 15 metres above the forest floor in a tree. Alison Livermore engaged tree professionals to install four nesting boxes on her property. Greater Gliders have been spotted in the Mullundung Forest, which borders the Livermore property. They hope that by installing nesting boxes on their property, they can help to secure the future of the species in the region. (PS)
