East Gippsland Active Transport Inc (EGATI) is a community group with a mission “To advocate for safe, equitable and functional active transport infrastructure in East Gippsland”.
A major project it is working on is to develop a safe, off road route for cyclists between Bairnsdale and Paynesville. The Paynesville Road is far too busy and dangerous.
On Sunday, June 22, an event will take place with a two-fold purpose:
1. To give people an opportunity to ride
the Paynesville Road in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.
2. To promote the work EGATI is doing
both generally and specifically to develop an alternate route from Bairnsdale to
Eagle Point.
In order for the riding event to be safe, there will be a 40km/hr speed limit for cars on the 6km section of the Paynesville Road that people will be riding as well as flagmen where cyclists will need to cross the Paynesville Road. There will also be experienced riders accompanying the participants a bus and bike trailer in case of breakdowns.
On arrival in Eagle Point there will be food and coffee available, information about the work EGATI is doing.
The group needs participants to register for this free event on the East Gippsland Winter Festival website. Just go to East Gippsland Winter Festival website. On the program page search for ‘Group Ride’, or find it by date ‘June 22’. You must register before June 15.
