A dedicated group of local women have been quietly but diligently making a big impact, one stitch at a time.
The local Community Sewing Group, (a project of the Lions Club of Gippsland Lakes Lionesses), based out of the local Lakes Entrance Coast Guard Building, has recently celebrated a week of generosity and productivity receiving numerous donations of fleece, flannelette
and other fabrics to make blankets for their latest project.
This week’s influx of supplies has helped the group create a fresh batch of cosy blankets for the local Neighbourhood House in Lakes Entrance, a small part of their wide-reaching and heartfelt mission.
Their sewing machines rarely sit idle, with members constantly producing a range of handmade items that are donated to Bairnsdale Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit, local Aged Care Communities, Annie’s Cottage (a local children’s respite home), and numerous other local projects.
One of the sewing ladies summed up the groups efforts saying “This group is an invaluable part of our community. We are passionate about what we do, and really feel that we make a difference”.
“Our dedication and work brings comfort, warmth and joy to so many people—from elderly residents to children with complex needs,” they said.
The group has become a cherished local fixture, not only for their creations but for the compassion and camaraderie they bring. Each handmade item is crafted with care and purpose, delivering not just practical
support but also emotional warmth to its recipients.
In addition, the recent donations of fabric
and batting have come from generous local residents and businesses, a gesture that
has not gone unnoticed.
“We are incredibly grateful for the kindness of our community,” Jo Buckler, project coordinator of the sewing group, said.
“Every donation helps us keep sewing, and every item we make goes straight back to the community that supports us.”
In a world that often moves too fast, the sewing group reminds us that small acts of kindness — stitched with care — can make the biggest difference.
The sewing group meets every Tuesday from 10am until 1pm at the Coast Guard Building in Lakes Entrance.
All levels of sewing ability is welcome, from beginners to advanced.
