Netball in East Gippsland continues to thrive. (PS)

Netball in East Gippsland is experiencing a remarkable surge in participation, reflecting the region’s deepening passion for the sport.

This growth is evident across various demographics, with notable increases in both female and male engagement.

Recent data underscores this upward trend, in 2023, Netball Victoria reported over 111,000 members statewide, marking significant growth in male participation by 20 per cent and among culturally and linguistically diverse communities by 28 per cent.

This inclusive expansion is mirrored in East Gippsland, where local initiatives have successfully attracted a diverse range of participants.

Efforts to involve more males in netball have been particularly successful, in October 2023, Netball Victoria’s Eastern Region participation coordinator highlighted that 346 boys were actively playing netball in Gippsland.

This reflects a broader commitment to making netball accessible and appealing to all genders.

To accommodate and encourage this growth, significant investments

have been made in local sporting facilities.

The WORLD Sporting Precinct in Bairnsdale underwent a $17.4 million redevelopment, with stages one, two and three officially opening in December 2024.

This project was prioritised due to the strong participation and growth in netball, among other sports.

The upgraded facilities provide modern courts and amenities, enhancing the playing experience for netballers and fostering community engagement.

Recognising the importance of structured development, the East Gippsland Shire Council endorsed the East Gippsland Sporting Facilities Plan in November 2023.

This plan outlines a framework for future sporting facility developments, ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with the growing demand and continues to support the netball community effectively.

The surge in netball participation has had a profound impact on the East Gippsland community and local clubs have seen increased membership, leading to more competitive leagues and a vibrant sporting culture.

The emphasis on inclusivity has strengthened community bonds, promoting values of teamwork and mutual respect.

As netball continues to thrive in East Gippsland, ongoing support from local authorities, clubs, and the community will be crucial.

Sustained investment in facilities, coaching, and inclusive programs will ensure that netball remains a unifying and empowering force in the region for years to come.

The remarkable growth of netball in East Gippsland is a testament to the community’s dedication and passion for the sport.

Through strategic planning, inclusive initiatives, and significant infrastructure investments, netball has become more accessible and enjoyable for all.

This positive trajectory not only enhances the sporting landscape but also enriches the social fabric of East Gippsland, fostering a healthier and more connected community.
