Pelicans fly high

The Lakes Entrance Pelicans are the division six Country Champions after a successful weekend at Melton. The team contained Durome Abbey, Cooper Linn, Oscar Mann, Lochie Yates, Jacob Silver, Cooper Anderson, Kye Piper, Yvan Cabrera, Ayden Martin and Tyler Hutton. (PS)

The Lakes Entrance Pelicans are the division six Country Champions after a successful weekend at Melton. The team contained Durome Abbey, Cooper Linn, Oscar Mann, Lochie Yates, Jacob Silver, Cooper Anderson, Kye Piper, Yvan Cabrera, Ayden Martin and Tyler Hutton. (PS)

The Lakes Entrance Pelicans performed sensationally at the Country Championships at Melton last weekend, highlight by the grand final win of the under 16 boys.

After early losses to Moe and Newborough, the lads found their mojo knocking off Orbost, Seymour and Morwell on the way to a division six grand final appointment with Nhill.

With Durome Abbey and Yvan Cabrera both shooting 12 points, the Pelicans ran out 56-33 winners to the delight of supporters, parents and coaching staff.

The team was coached by Damian Abbey, with the assistance of Josh Piper.

The under 18 boys scored impressive wins against Myrtleford and Phillip Island, before succumbing to Benalla in a thrilling semi final 50-47.

Jake DeDonato (18), Zane Holley (14) and Xavier Martin (10) all creating plenty of scoreboard pressure.

The under 18 girls impressed beating Mildura and Warragul in the preliminary rounds, but unfortunately were outclassed by Pakenham in a quarter final 61-12.

Local umpire Gabi Wright refereed over the championships, being mentored by Basketball Victoria Officials.
