With the announcement the Lakes Entrance Lions Club is folding at the end of June, there has been some confusion within the community.
Although it is a big loss to the town to lose such an organisation, many are not aware that there are actually two Lions Clubs in Lakes Entrance.
The Lakes Entrance Lions Club, which is folding, runs the weekly bingo nights at the Mechanics Hall, as well as running the sausage sizzle van at the monthly Foreshore Market and the Bairnsdale Speedway and more. They have just finished a major raffle fundraiser for local schools.
The Lions Club of Gippsland Lakes Lionesses was formed several years ago when Lions International decided there were to be no more Lioness Clubs attached to a Lions Club, explained their vice president Maria Armistead.
“So our group of women Lionesses formed our own Lions Club, as a result Lakes Entrance then had two Lions Clubs,” she said.
“We are a very busy and active club of women Lionesses and we work hard in the community. “We run the Lioness Indoor Market at the Mechanics Hall once every three months. We do a lot of light catering job as well as make Emergency Sandwiches for our local schools. We support our project, Community Sewing East Gippsland, a group of sewing ladies who make and donate items to local nursing homes, hospital and other charity organisations.
“We have collaborated with Lakes Entrance Lions Club in many events together over the years and will continue to do so until the end.
“On behalf of our club I would like to congratulate the Lakes Entrance Lions Club members past and present on their worthy efforts and support in our community,” Maria said.
