Cathy Chua and Michael Anderson opened Cathy’s Asian Kitchen last October and it has proved popular with locals and visitors from day one.
It is situated in the old Clancy’s Restaurant which had been empty for eight or nine years, with the décor just as it had been left.
“We decided to take the plunge and we are very pleased with how it is going, even having people travelling from Melbourne to eat here,” Michael said.
“The food is not Anglicised, it is authentic Malaysian which is fast becoming the premium food worldwide.”
The couple have renovated the kitchen to Cathy’s cooking style which allows for fast, fresh food straight from the wok to the table. Cathy’s son has moved to Australia and is helping out in the kitchen.
Meat and vegetables are sourced locally but they do make trips to Melbourne to obtain specialised spices and other ingredients to give a true Malaysian flavour.
Cathy has a background in cooking in her home country. First working in a Hawker style openspaced restaurant and then her own restaurant in Salksouth, Kuala Lumpur after arriving in Australia, she studied hospitality including
cooking and business management before moving to Lakes Entrance in 2012.
They keep themselves busy with the restaurant as well as managing the North Arm Tourist Park, plus Michael works as a business consultant to the State and Federal Government and is a real estate agent.
The restaurant is open from 11am to 2pm for lunch and 5pm to 8pm for dinner, closed Mondays. All meals are available as takeaways, which is also proving a popular part of the business.
